Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, as President of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, presented the priorities and programme of Lithuania’s Presidency to members of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, sent a letter to Matteo Mecacci, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), in which he addressed the decision of the ODIHR not to accept Lithuania’s invitation to observe this weekend’s presidential election in Lithuania.

On May 12, Lithuania begins its work in the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Lithuania was elected to this important post for the period 2024-2026 at the annual conference of States Parties of the Chemical Weapons Convention last November.

On May 10, the Foreign Ministry held the 9th meeting of the so-called Core Group in Vilnius to create a special international tribunal to prosecute the crime of aggression against Ukraine. This is the first time the international law experts have met in Vilnius. The Core Group was set up in the wake of Russia’s unjustified and widespread war of aggression against Ukraine. It aims to find the legal solutions necessary to ensure international accountability for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. Experts from states and international organisations are working to find solutions for a special international tribunal that could prosecute the political and military leaders of Russia and its accomplice Belarus for the devastating and ongoing crime of aggression against Ukraine that has shocked the entire international community.

On 22 April in Luxembourg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, attended the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council, which discussed the situation in Ukraine and the necessary support from the EU in a joint session gathering both EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs and EU Ministers of Defence. A joint session of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs focused on the situation of the Middle East and Sudan.

On April 19 in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, will meet with Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE). The Secretary General will visit Lithuania ahead of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the CoE, which begins on May 17 this year. During the six months, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs will serve as the President of the Committee of Ministers of the CoE.

On April 9-10, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, participated in the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Visby, Sweden. The meeting focused on regional security, preparations for the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., closer NB8 cooperation, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and more effective and strategic support to the country facing aggression.
