Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Survila meets with the U.S. Department of State Special Envoy
On 5 December, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Survila met with the U.S. Department of State Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Ellen Germain. The meeting focused on Holocaust education, the fight against anti-Semitism, and the perpetuation of the memory of the Holocaust.
Germain welcomed the draft law submitted by the Lithuanian Government to the Seimas that aims to resolve outstanding issues regarding the non-repayable property of Jewish people who lived in Lithuania before the Second World War. The Special Envoy stressed that ensuring justice for Holocaust survivors and their heirs was an important issue of human rights and the rule of law.
Survila informed the U.S. representative that the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport had updated history programmes of study for secondary schools several months ago according to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s recommendations on teaching about the Holocaust. In addition, Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister and the Special Envoy also discussed cooperation with the U.S. on the perpetuation of the memory of the Holocaust in Lithuania.
