Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis to attend the events of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in New York

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy will also attend the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council in New York, the Transatlantic Ministerial Meeting organised by the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various world regions. The visit agenda includes meetings with the heads of the United Nations, the World Economic Forum and other organisations, as well as with representatives of the academic community.

In New York, Landsbergis will speak at an event aimed to secure accountability for Russia’s crime of aggression and other crimes against Ukraine, as well as in a discussion organised by the Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on threats to Belarusian sovereignty and at other events.

Participants of the general debate of the 78th UN General Assembly will seek a common understanding of the world’s issues and ways to address today’s cascading crises (wars and conflicts, sustainable development, humanitarian challenges, climate change, challenges facing the global economy). An action-oriented Pact for the Future, which the UN Secretary-General proposed, is also expected to be agreed by member states.

This year, world leaders will engage in the high-level General Debate under the theme “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.”

During his visit to New York, Landsbergis, together with ministers from other countries, also plans to sign an agreement on marine biodiversity to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
