Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis to attend the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York
From 19 to 23 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis is attending the seventy-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly. During his visit to New York as part of the delegation led by the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, Landsbergis will attend the general debate under the theme, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”, and other high-level events of the 77th session of the General Assembly.
The participants of the UN General Assembly will seek a consensus for addressing the global challenges facing the world today, ranging from dealing with pandemics, wars and conflicts, humanitarian crises and climate change to the challenges facing the global economy. They will also discuss ways to enhance the resilience of future generations in the face of emerging crises.
Issues pertaining to education, the protection of human rights, including women’s and children’s rights, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, strengthening multilateralism, security and conflict prevention, and media freedom will also be discussed. Many events will focus on Russia’s war against Ukraine, its implications, as well as accountability for war crimes.
In New York, Landsbergis will hold bilateral meetings with foreign ministers of various regions to discuss topical items on bilateral, regional and international agendas, possibilities to strengthen bilateral political and economic cooperation, current and future diplomatic representation, and partnership within international organisations.
The Foreign Minister will present Lithuania’s position at the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers. Landsbergis will also attend a high-level meeting to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, and the Bucharest Nine (B9) meeting of Foreign Ministers.
During his visit, Landsbergis will attend a ministerial level meeting of the Group of Friends of Accountability for Russia's war crimes in Ukraine and the UN Security Council's meeting on the situation in Ukraine that is organised by France.
Landsbergis will also attend a Transatlantic Ministerial Meeting, organised at the initiative of the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and will meet with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
At Yale University in New Haven, Landsbergis will meet with the President of Yale University Peter Salovey, Professor Timothy Snyder, other members of the academic community, and will participate in the "Conversation on the future or Trans-Atlantic Relations, and Global Implications of Russia’s War in Ukraine".
In addition, the chief of Lithuania's diplomacy will meet with representatives of American Jewish organisations.
