Lithuania and Latvia strengthen cooperation to address common challenges faced by the region
On 8 November, political consultations between Lithuania and Latvia were held in Vilnius. The consultations were led by the Political Directors of both countries' Foreign Ministries - Asta Skaisgirytė and Jānis Mažeiks. The political consultations focused on important foreign and security policy issues, items on the bilateral cooperation agenda.
The officials dedicated significant attention to transatlantic policy. They discussed ways to tackle challenges to regional security, the next steps for implementing the NATO summit decisions relevant to the Baltic states, and strengthening NATO capabilities in the region. The participants of the meeting agreed to more effectively use the possibilities offered by regional formats, to coordinate actions to counter hybrid, cyber threats, and disinformation not only in Lithuania and Latvia, but also in other countries of the region.
As regards the Eastern Partnership initiative, the officials highlighted the need to maintain their focus on Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. In the context of the reform process, the achievements of these countries are the most visible and must be evaluated appropriately. The officials agreed to keep working to maintain sanctions against Russia until there was some real progress in implementing the Minsk agreements.
When discussing energy issues in the region, Lithuanian and Latvian representatives agreed to work together for the full synchronization of the Baltic states' electricity networks with the continental European network.
The Political Directors also discussed foreign policy issues, including Iran, Syria, as well as prospects for the Middle East peace process.
