On 16 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius presented Andrius Kubilius' candidacy for the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to ambassadors of the Council of Europe member states residing in Lithuania.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister highlighted that A. Kubilius had excellent leadership and management skills, and the necessary ability to reach a compromise in order to meet challenges facing the Council of Europe.
"Andrius Kubilius has served as the Prime Minister of Lithuania twice during hard times for our country. He has accumulated not only experience in the field of politics, but also has very good strategic thinking that would benefit the Council of Europe today," said Linkevičius.
The Council of Europe is the continent's oldest political organization. It comprises 47 countries of Europe. Lithuania has been a member of this organization since 1993. The incumbent Secretary General of the Council of Europe is Thorbjørn Jagland (Norway).
