Georgia's progress towards membership of the EU and NATO discussed in Vilnius
On 23 October, the fifth meeting of the Lithuanian-Georgian Commission for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration took place in Vilnius. It was chaired by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries – Linas Linkevičius and David Zalkaliani.
"This week, the citizens of Georgia will make a very important decision on who should take the lead and represent the country. I believe that Georgia will prove its loyalty to European values," said the Minister L. Linkevičius.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister also noted that Georgia had achieved impressive results, especially in terms of integration into the European Union and NATO over the past few years. However, he encouraged to maintain the acceleration, to implement all the necessary reforms, and to think about goals for the future.
The Georgian Foreign Minister thanked Lithuania for its constant support for the country's strategic goals. Georgia‘s delegation also acquainted their Lithuanian colleagues with Georgia's Road Map of EU Integration and shared insights into the situation in Russian-occupied regions of Georgia.
This bilateral Commission was established in 2010 after signing the Charter on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration between Georgia and Lithuania. The document was updated in 2015 with the aim of further developing a special partnership between Lithuania and Georgia.
This is Zalkaliani‘s first official visit to Lithuania after his appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia in June this year.
