A long-term exposition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Lithuanian diplomatic service opens in Kaunas
A long-term exposition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Lithuanian diplomatic service was opened at the Rector's Office, Vytautas Magnus University, Donelaičio St. 58, Kaunas.
The location of the exposition is chosen symbolically, as Kaunas was the cradle of a modern Lithuanian diplomatic service in the interwar period. In the historic building, the Cabinet’s premises were on the ground floor, while the Foreign Minister’s official residence was on the second floor until the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. The hall in which the Rectorate holds its sittings today was a center of attraction for the foreign diplomatic community residing in Kaunas. Diplomatic receptions, various events took place there.
Exposition visitors will gain access to four areas that are dedicated to the activities of the diplomatic service of Lithuania (1918-2018): 1) the first space takes us to the origins of the Lithuanian diplomatic service. Visitors will also get acquainted with the establishment and activities of the diplomatic service of a modern State of Lithuania in the interwar period (1918-1940); 2) the second space is turned into the office of Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Stasys Lozoraitis (1934-1938). Visitors can expect to see authentic furniture of the office of the Foreign Minister and some of his more personal items; 3) the third space is dedicated to the activities of the diplomatic service led by the Chief of Diplomacy in exile (1940-1990), diplomats’ continuous effort and their struggle for the restoration of the country’s independence during the Soviet occupation of Lithuania; 4) the fourth space is the largest. It is dedicated to the activities of the diplomatic service from 1990 to 2018. It invites visitors to familiarize themselves with the Foreign Minister's working day and daily activities of the diplomatic service using a virtual environment.
The exhibition will run until 7 November 2021. The co-authors of the exposition are Dr. Vytautas Žalys and Prof. Dr. Alfonsas Eidintas.
